Research by the National Institute of Drug Abuse has shown, unequivocally, that good outcomes are contingent on adequate treatment length. The addict needs time to complete medical detox if necessary, adjust to abstinence and new surroundings, and begin therapy and exploration into underlying issues, and develop tools for living. Furthermore, the addict’s body and brain have been affected physically, and time is needed to heal. Generally, for residential treatment, participation can range from 30 to 90 days.
